The Challenge

In 2009, the homeowner, Lisa, bought the 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom house. It had already been extended a few years before, but still had small bedrooms.

In subsequent years, Lisa moved the kitchen, then added a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite to the master bedroom.

For this recent renovation, the challenge was to:

  • Create more space and privacy for the family’s teenage twins by adding another floor.
  • Maintain the consistency and continuity between the original 1950s house and the new additional storey.
  • Create a home office that could also double as a spare bedroom.

Addbuild's Response

  • The design is simple, practical and under budget. The new first floor consists of two bedrooms, a family ‘snug’ and one bathroom.
  • The first floor provides better views and increases natural light and ventilation.
  • Addbuild’s Designer took part of the small front bedroom to place the stairs to the first floor, increasing the entry living area with a nice improvement to have a more spacious ground floor area.
  • The first-floor addition offers design flexibility, allowing easy and comfortable circulation with the stairs next to the front door.
  • The first-floor design combines open areas with taller windows, enhancing sunlight and ventilation.
  • The lightweight cement-rendered cladding helps to reduce the visual impact of the new storey as well as providing durability, low maintenance and insulation properties.
  • The windows are double-glazed to keep the interior warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, leading to energy savings on heating and cooling bills.

What they said

We’re all enjoying our new space. Before we felt quite cramped, but now the house feels spacious and the clutter we felt before has gone. The kids are happier to bring their friends home and they have more space to study. I have already recommended Addbuild to friends. I liked the fact that they create a really good partnership with the right conversations. I felt listened to at all times and treated with respect, which is important to me.
